Good morning!
Our very first Cast Spotlight interview is...Brian Murphy! Brian has been in three Powell Playhouse productions: Lieutenant Rooney in "Arsenic and Old Lace," Oscar in "The Odd Couple," and Office Jankie in "Everybody Loves Opal." Now he's back as Dad in "A Nice Family Gathering!"
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Brian: I work in a Powell based business called US Gold n Guns and another business called Knox Gold Exchange. I'm married to Leanne Murphy and I have two children--Corban Murphy, a senior at Temple Baptist Academy, and Holly Murphy, a freshman at Grace Christian Academy. I write music and songs and play a variety of instruments and always enjoy entertaining!
What's a fun fact about yourself?
Brian: I once won a talent contest by breaking dancing!
How did you get involved with the Powell Playhouse?
Brian: I was invited through a customer and personally DEMANDED by NITA to try out for a part "Arsenic and Old Lace." (lol Everyone knows what I mean, you never said NO! to Nita).
Can you give a brief timeline of your involvement in theatre?
Brian: I got involved with the Powell Playhouse during the summer of 2012 in preparation for my role in "Arsenic and Old Lace."
What is your favorite role you have ever played and why?
Brian: Oscar!! In "The Odd Couple" mainly because it was an opportunity to play a part that was both a shared lead role and it had a comedic spin to it as well.
What is your favorite show you have been in and why?
Brian: "The Odd Couple." It was so much fun working with the cast and hearing the audience love what we all came together to create! "Arsenic and Old Lace" is REALLY a CLOSE CLOSE second though!
What is your best onstage mishap?
Brian: CRAZY!!!! But in "Arsenic and Old Lace" on stage as Lt. Rooney after saying a line my gun falls out and rolls across the stage! I just walked over and softly knelt down and picked it up and said "Get back here!" I'm sure the cast heard it but I don't think the audience did.
Do you have any funny audition stories?
Brian: In this last audition I got the lines mixed up and read the line "I've gotten fat" or something like that.
What would be your dream role and why?
Brian: Not sure yet, I think at some point I would REALLY enjoy doing some sort of musical and a DARK character role (mainly to stretch my acting dimension). (Blogger outside comment: The Phantom of the Opera? Just a thought. "Night time sharpens...heightens each sensation...")
Cats or dogs?
Brian: Dogs! We have two wonderful schnauzers, a girl, Maggie Bell, and a boy, Bentley.
Paper or plastic?
Brian: Plastic because I HATE the environment! Just kidding about that but plastic has better handles.
If you could sing one song on American Idol, what would it be?
Brian: ANYTHING! But a cool Michael Buble song would be fun or a Bluesy Ray Charles song.
If you were on a deserted island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?
Brian: Family, food, and a Genie lamp so I could have more wishes :)
Ladies and gentlemen, that was Brian Murphy! Take it from someone who has seen/worked on his past shows...I guarantee his performance will be spectacular!
